Ron Francis, a Hall of Fame player and former executive, has rejoined the Pittsburgh Penguins in a newly created role as Special Advisor for Hockey Operations. The appointment was confirmed by General Manager Kyle Dubas, who emphasized Francis’s integrity, extensive management background, and deep personal connection to the organization.
Francis’s ties to the region stretch back to his childhood in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where his grandfather coached him and his father worked as a steelworker for decades. Those roots have long informed his affection for Pittsburgh, a city he describes as a place where he feels like ‘coming home.’
A Career Forged in Victory and Vision
Inducted into the Penguins Hall of Fame in 2025, Francis brings a résumé that includes Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and 1992, a fifth‑place ranking in NHL history for points and a second‑place ranking for assists. After stints as general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes and the expansion Seattle Kraken, he now returns to Pittsburgh to help shape roster construction, strategic planning and system optimization.
Dubas, whose own family history intertwines with Francis’s — his grandfather coached Francis as a boy and his father faced Francis’s father on the ice — has praised the veteran’s playing experience and management acumen. Their professional relationship dates back to Toronto, where Francis once tried to lure Dubas to the West Coast before both settled in Pittsburgh.

The announcement was marked by a reunion of former teammates, including Mario Lemieux, Phil Bourque, Jay Caufield and Kevin Stevens, who gathered during Jaromir Jagr’s retirement ceremony to toast the new chapter. Their presence underscored the enduring bonds that have defined the franchise’s culture for generations.
Francis expressed that his return is not merely a professional move but a personal homecoming, citing the city’s passionate fan base and the legacy of his own family’s industrial heritage.
