Marist University has revealed its trio of leaders for the upcoming 2026 football campaign, naming Sonny Mannino, Kade Werner and Lincoln Cardillo as the team's captains.
Leadership Continuity and New Faces
Mannino, a graduate quarterback who previously guided the program to a historic turnaround, will wear the armband for a second straight year, bringing a blend of on‑field experience and academic distinction that has become a hallmark of his tenure.
Werner, a senior linebacker celebrated for his scholarly achievements, steps into the captaincy for the first time, while Cardillo, a senior running back also making his debut in the role, adds depth to the leadership group.
The season will open on August 28 with a matchup against New Haven, followed by a September 4 contest against Franklin Pierce, setting the stage for a schedule that emphasizes both competitive challenge and community engagement.
Both Mannino and Cardillo have been recognized on the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll, and Cardillo’s recent nomination to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team underscores the program’s commitment to service off the field.
Academic Excellence Meets Community Impact
The captains’ résumés reflect a blend of athletic prowess and scholarly dedication, with Mannino earning the PFL Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honor and maintaining a spot on the Academic Honor Roll for four consecutive years.
Werner’s accolades include two seasons on the PFL Academic Honor Roll and a College Sports Communicators Academic All‑District selection, while Cardillo’s three‑time Honor Roll status highlights his consistent performance in the classroom.
Together, the three seniors represent a new chapter for Marist football, one that seeks to build on past successes while charting a course defined by perseverance, integrity, and a commitment to the broader student body.
