The University of Tennessee announced that Faison Brandon, a true freshman, will open the 2026 season as the Volunteers' starting quarterback, a decision that caps a whirlwind recruitment and eligibility saga.
A Freshman's Unlikely Path
Brandon first set foot on campus in January, but his debut was delayed when incumbent starter Joey Aguilar lost eligibility following a Knoxville court ruling. The legal hurdle forced coaches to keep the freshman on the bench while they weighed other options.
When the staff finally turned to the practice field, Brandon's combination of arm strength, mobility and rapid mastery of Josh Heupel's pro‑style offense set him apart. He outperformed sophomore George MacIntyre and Colorado transfer Ryan Staub, both of whom were considered front‑runners for the position.
Ranked third in the 2026 class by the 247Sports Composite, Brandon arrived with five‑star expectations. His ability to deliver accurate downfield passes while also threatening with his legs convinced the coaching staff that the team could build around a dual‑threat quarterback.
The Volunteers will test the newcomer in the season opener against Furman at Neyland Stadium on September 5. The matchup will pit the freshman against a list of the program's most prolific passers — Peyton Manning, Casey Clausen, Erik Ainge, Tyler Bray and Joshua Dobbs — who have each left a lasting imprint on Tennessee football.
Coach Josh Heupel, who has guided the offense through a period of transition, praised Brandon's work ethic and poise under pressure. "He has earned this opportunity," Heupel said, "and we expect him to lead the team with the same intensity we have come to expect from our tradition of quarterbacks."
