JMU's 2027 Football Season Begins with a Fresh Start
James Madison University’s football program will open its 2027 campaign on August 28 at home, welcoming Duquesne to Bridgeforth Stadium. The matchup marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools and arrives as part of a broader shift in college football scheduling.
The start date reflects the NCAA’s recent decision to anchor the season on the last Saturday of August, a change that eliminates the need for waivers and lets teams like JMU schedule a full slate of games without extra approvals.
The New Scheduling Landscape
The NCAA’s rule change not only reshapes the calendar but also levels the playing field for programs seeking to maximize non‑conference opportunities.
For JMU, the adjustment means fewer logistical hurdles and a clearer path to set up marquee matchups, including the renewal of the Delaware rivalry that has been a staple of the program’s identity.
The schedule also restores a long‑awaited rivalry with Delaware on September 18 and adds a road test at UNLV on September 25, while the original opener against Maryland slides to the second week of the season.
Under the new framework, JMU will play 12 games spread over 14 weeks, a density that promises frequent contests and a compacted rhythm for players and fans alike.
Coach Mike Houston has highlighted the significance of the home opener, noting it will be the seventh time in eight seasons that the team begins its year in front of its own crowd.
