A New Chapter for Chicago Sports
Chicago State University is set to field its first Division I football team in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), becoming the only program of its kind in the city of Chicago. The initiative, years in the making, reflects the university's ambition to expand athletic offerings and engage the broader community.
The program will begin competition in the 2025 season, with a slate of 11 games that includes four home matchups at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview. The stadium, known for hosting major sporting events and concerts, will serve as the primary venue for the Cougars, providing a modern backdrop for the team's debut.
Head coach Bobby Rome II, hired in April 2025, will lead the squad into its inaugural campaign. His appointment was officially approved by the university in December 2024, setting the stage for a structured rollout that emphasizes player development and community ties.
The Cougars' first game is scheduled for August 29 against Roosevelt University, a non‑conference matchup that will kick off a season designed to showcase local talent. In addition to on‑field competition, the program aims to leverage Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals to provide financial opportunities for student‑athletes from the South Side and surrounding neighborhoods.
Beyond the gridiron, the initiative represents a cultural milestone for Chicago State and its surrounding communities. By offering a platform for local athletes to pursue higher education and athletic excellence, the university hopes to foster a new era of sports engagement that resonates throughout the city.
