Riverview Gabriel Richard High School is joining forces with Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central High School to field a single ice‑hockey program for the 2026‑27 season, a move that will bring together roughly 459 students under one banner and secure a spot in the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Division 3 postseason.
A legacy of excellence meets a new challenge
The Riverview program has long been a dominant force in Division 3, capturing eight straight regional titles and building a reputation for disciplined play. Yet the upcoming campaign will mark its smallest roster in recent memory, forcing the team to rebuild after losing four of its top five scorers from the previous year.
Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, which has not fielded an independent hockey squad since the 2022‑23 season, is entering a transitional phase as it prepares to join the Catholic High School League for all sports in 2027‑28. The partnership gives the school an immediate competitive outlet while it works toward full league integration.
The newly formed co‑op will open its schedule on November 11 against Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, a matchup that will test the squad’s chemistry early on. Veteran forward Cameron Cousino, who helped the Downriver Unified co‑op in recent years, is expected to provide leadership amid the roster turnover.
