Iaroslav Niagu, a 7‑foot forward from Russia, announced his commitment to the Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball program on Monday, bringing a blend of size and experience to a roster that has been hit by injuries.

The Buffs have been forced to look for additional frontcourt options after first‑year Australian big man Goc Malual was limited by a summer injury and transfer David Gomez, who came in from Charlotte, missed most of the preseason with a foot problem, appearing in only two games during the 2025‑26 campaign.
Coach Tad Boyle has emphasized that the team’s depth chart now exceeds the standard 15‑player limit, but a grandfathered exception allows the program to carry a 16th player, giving Niagu a spot on the bench.
Eligibility in Question
Niagu’s eligibility, however, remains uncertain. The forward’s status hinges on an ongoing appeal related to a North Carolina court case that granted him an extra year of athletic eligibility, a decision that could determine whether he can suit up for the upcoming season.
His most productive collegiate season came at Jacksonville State, where he logged 20.8 minutes per game, averaging 4.2 points and 5.1 rebounds over 29 appearances. Prior to that, he spent a year each at Charlotte and the University of South Carolina, where he faced the Buffs twice, recording a single rebound in limited minutes.
Off the court, Niagu’s financial agreements are still pending, adding another layer of complexity to his integration into the program as the team prepares for the new campaign.
