A Star Repeats as Delco’s Baseball Player of the Year
Jimmy Boyle, the Haverford High School pitcher, has been named the 2026 Baseball Player of the Year, becoming the first Haverford player to win the honor since Ronny Tanner in 2009. His 0.93 ERA and 6‑1 record anchored a season in which he struck out 100 batters over 60 innings, limiting opponents to a .131 batting average.
Boyle’s offensive contributions were equally impressive, as he posted a .281 average, a .465 on‑base percentage, scored 19 runs and hit two home runs. The accolade reflects a third straight All‑Delco selection and cements his place among the county’s all‑time greats.
Mentors, Coaches, and a Community’s Influence
Longtime pitching coach Chuck Bushbeck, a former MLB scout who has mentored more than 20 drafted players, helped refine Boyle’s repertoire. Under the guidance of coaches Mike Essery and Brian Miller, Haverford’s program evolved into a top‑tier team that captured its first Central League championship in 38 years and repeated the feat the following season.
The team’s success was not limited to the mound; infielders Gavin DiRita, Zach Murray and Danny Meakim, along with outfielders Ryan Friel, Jackson Burger and Nick Corse, contributed to a lineup that blended power and patience. Catcher Shane Durkan, who returned from a serious football injury, played a pivotal role in the undefeated league run.
Family ties run deep in Boyle’s baseball story. His grandfather Jim and father John introduced him to the game with backyard Wiffle ball battles, laying the foundation for a career that now heads to Thomas Jefferson University, where he will continue under coach Jarad Carney.
Boyle’s journey also reflects the broader Delaware County landscape, from the historic streets of Haverford to nearby towns such as Radnor, Bonner & Prendergast, and Chichester, all of which have nurtured the region’s baseball tradition.
