The South Carolina men’s soccer team opened its season with a commanding 4-0 victory over USC Upstate, treating a packed Stone Stadium to a display of attacking flair and defensive solidity.
Alejandro Velazquez-Lopez broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, slotting a finish after a precise pass from Angel Lopez that left the opposition’s goalkeeper stranded.
The lead was doubled shortly after the break when Velazquez-Lopez converted a penalty, extending the advantage to 2-0 and shifting momentum firmly in Carolina’s favor.
Midway through the second half, Loïc Sany Kong struck in the 15th minute of the period, and Mika Habel added another goal in the 54th minute, ensuring the team posted four goals before the final whistle.
The Gamecocks’ back line proved equally potent, restricting USC Upstate to just two shots on target and marking the second straight match in which South Carolina has scored at least four goals.
Looking ahead
The team’s next test arrives on August 28, when they travel to face Clemson at 7:00 PM, a matchup that promises another early‑season showdown.
