Indiana University announced the addition of Jaeden Mustaf, a 6‑foot‑6 combo guard/wing who spent the last two seasons at Georgia Tech. The transfer comes after a season in which Mustaf averaged 10.4 points, 2.4 assists and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 38 percent from three‑point range on limited attempts.
A Playmaker With a Penetrator’s Mindset
Coaches have long praised Mustaf’s ability to attack the rim using his strong frame and quick first step. At Georgia Tech he logged a free‑throw rate of 47.6 percent and a 72.7 percent mark from the charity stripe, underscoring his preference for finishing at the basket rather than pulling up for mid‑range shots.
His assist rate of 16.6 percent last season outpaced many of his ACC counterparts, indicating a willingness to create opportunities for teammates. While his three‑point volume was modest — just 1.9 attempts per game — his 38 percent shooting suggests he can stretch defenses when called upon.
At Indiana, Mustaf is expected to share the backcourt with returning guards Bryce Lindsay and Markus Burton, while also seeing time at the small forward position. The coaching staff, led by head coach Darian DeVries, believes his experience in the ACC will translate well to the rigors of Big Ten play.
The move reflects a strategic shift toward a more dynamic, small‑ball lineup. By inserting Mustaf at the four spot when Aiden Sherrell rests, Indiana can deploy a versatile unit that can both defend the perimeter and attack the paint.
With the conference schedule looming, the Hoosiers hope Mustaf’s penetration off the dribble will address a need that persisted throughout the previous season. His physicality and experience should help the team compete against the league’s increasingly rugged defenses.
