Alpharetta’s City Council voted 4‑3 to rezone the North Point Mall site, clearing a critical regulatory hurdle for a transformative mixed‑use development that could reshape the northern suburbs of Atlanta.
The approved plan envisions a 20,000‑seat arena that would serve as the home of a potential NHL franchise, alongside approximately 1,385 new apartments, office towers, a 650‑room hotel and more than 565,000 square feet of commercial space.
Developers New York Life and Jamestown have outlined a plan that includes tearing down the majority of the existing mall, preserving the Von Maur and Dillard’s anchors, and constructing seven parking decks with 8,750 spaces, a 30,000‑square‑foot conference center and extensive open areas.
A hockey‑centric hub for the region
The project remains subject to a series of conditions, including compliance with the city’s master plan, additional rezoning requests and variances that will be reviewed in upcoming public hearings. Infrastructure considerations such as MARTA bus access are also being factored into the design.
City officials emphasized that the redevelopment represents the largest single‑site redevelopment effort in Atlanta’s history, noting that the approval marks a pivotal milestone for the development team and for the broader quest to attract a professional hockey team to the region, though no franchise has been confirmed.
