Rich Kelly, a former college basketball player and UConn graduate assistant, has taken a decisive step toward the NBA by joining the Boston Celtics' coaching structure. His move comes after a distinguished playing career that included stints at Fairfield Prep, Cheshire Academy, Montverde Academy, Boston College and UMass, where he averaged double‑digit points before becoming a key contributor on UConn’s 2024 national championship team.
A developmental vision takes shape
During three years as a graduate assistant at UConn, Kelly caught the eye of Celtics president Brad Stevens, who was scouting the program for talent and leadership potential. His analytical work included predraft workouts with prospects such as Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr., showcasing his ability to evaluate talent at the professional level.
In the fall of 2023 Kelly accepted an assistant coaching position with the Maine Celtics, the G‑League affiliate based in Portland, Maine, where he now works alongside head coach Phil Pressey. The role allows him to blend his playing experience with a commitment to player development in a professional setting.
Kelly’s decision to leave college basketball for the Celtics was motivated by the organization’s leadership and development opportunities, particularly under Brad Stevens and head coach Joe Mazzulla. He will split his time between Shelton, Connecticut, and Boston, commuting to support the Celtics’ developmental pipeline while shaping the next generation of talent.
The upcoming Maine Celtics roster is expected to feature players like Milos Uzan, Tucker DeVries and Dillon Mitchell on Exhibit 10 contracts, underscoring the affiliate’s role as a proving ground for Celtics’ ambitions. Kelly’s presence adds a championship pedigree and a deep understanding of the Celtics’ culture to the team’s coaching staff.
