Key Additions for the Boilermakers
Purdue University is counting on a pair of emerging talents to shore up its roster as the 2026 season approaches. The Boilermakers have identified wide receiver Jesse Watson and defensive back Ta’Vari Hampton as focal points for both offensive and defensive improvement.
Watson, a redshirt sophomore from St. Louis, Missouri, entered the program with a strong high school pedigree that included 865 all‑purpose yards and seven touchdowns. Though he only caught eight passes for 80 yards and two scores in 2025, his limited college snap count belies a ceiling that coaches believe is still rising.
The coaching staff expects Watson to earn more playing time despite not being a starter, using his experience from 12 games in the previous season as a foundation for growth. His recruitment class of 2024 added depth to the wide receiver corps, and the team hopes his development will translate into more reliable targets for the offense.
On the defensive side, Ta’Vari Hampton brings a junior‑college background from Northeast Oklahoma A&M, where he earned Second Team NJCAA All‑American honors in 2025 with 115 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, four interceptions and two forced fumbles. Transitioning to Division I football in the Big Ten represents a steep jump in competition, but Hampton is slated to contribute on special teams and in the defensive backfield rotation.
Both players embody the Boilermakers’ strategy of blending proven high‑school talent with promising transfers to close the gap in performance. Their progress will be closely watched as Purdue seeks to strengthen its position within the conference and improve its overall record for the upcoming season.
