The Alpharetta City Council voted Tuesday to approve a sweeping redevelopment plan for the aging North Point Mall, setting the stage for a potential NHL arena and a broader mixed‑use district.
The 4‑3 decision unlocks a Tax Allocation District that could channel up to $280 million over three decades for public infrastructure, though the exact financial outlay and the arena’s price tag remain unsettled.
Mixed‑Use Vision and NHL Ambitions
The proposal envisions a 4,000‑seat music hall, a 2,000‑seat practice facility, a 350‑room hotel, roughly 750,000 square feet of office space and 565,000 square feet of retail and dining venues spread across 26 acres of parkland.
Crucially, the rental component of the project is tied to the NHL’s decision to award a franchise to the Atlanta metro area, a move that would create the region’s third NHL team.
Funding the Vision
City officials emphasized that they are moving forward without any existing commitment from the league, hoping the redevelopment will make the area more attractive to prospective owners.
While Atlanta has been floated as an expansion candidate, recent NHL statements have prioritized a Texas franchise, leaving the Atlanta bid in a holding pattern.
The council’s approval also required consent from Fulton County and the local school district, and the final terms of the Tax Allocation District could differ markedly from the projected $225‑$280 million range.
