Gary Philpott Joins Manhattan Jaspers Coaching Staff
The Manhattan University men’s soccer program announced today that Gary Philpott, a seasoned goalkeeper specialist and former USL League One assistant coach, will serve as the new assistant coach for the Jaspers. The appointment was highlighted in a press release that underscores Philpott’s extensive playing and coaching pedigree, which includes stints with Cork City in Ireland and leadership roles in youth development programs across the Northeast.
Philpott’s playing career began in the youth academies of Cork City, where he helped the club capture the FAI Youth Cup and the FAI A‑Championship. After turning professional, he earned a USSF C License and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Cork Institute of Technology, credentials that blend technical expertise with analytical rigor.
Before arriving in Riverdale, Philpott honed his coaching philosophy at Westchester Soccer Club, where he served as Head Goalkeeper Coach and Video & Performance Analyst. In that role he mentored goalkeeper Andrew Hammersley, whose standout performances earned a spot on the USL Bench for his shot‑stopping and penalty‑kick denial skills.
His recent work with New York GAA saw Philpott guide Avenues New York to an ACIS Championship in 2024, a triumph that showcased his ability to build infrastructure and performance analytics for emerging teams. He also co‑founded the New York International Football Club, a platform that introduced data‑driven player development to the APSL circuit.
Philpott’s academic background complements his practical experience. He holds a USSF C License and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Cork Institute of Technology, a combination that he says informs his approach to budgeting, recruitment and long‑term program sustainability.
The Jaspers’ athletic director, Tom Giovatto, praised the hire, noting that Philpott’s international perspective and proven track record in player development align perfectly with the program’s ambition to elevate its competitive edge. Giovatto emphasized that Philpott will work closely with the existing staff to integrate analytics, video review and tactical training into daily sessions.
Conor McGlynn, a midfielder who started 16 of 20 matches last season and contributed four goals and two assists, is among the returning players expected to benefit from Philpott’s expertise. The coaching staff hopes that the new assistant will help the team capitalize on its growing talent pool as it prepares for the upcoming season.
Philpott’s appointment comes as the Manhattan University men’s soccer program welcomes 26 new incoming players, a sign of expanding recruitment efforts. The coaching staff believes that the blend of seasoned veterans and fresh prospects will foster a stronger culture and greater on‑field cohesion.
