Weber State University’s football program is set to reshape its leadership model for the 2026 season, introducing a player‑driven council that will guide the Wildcats beyond the traditional captain framework.
The council, comprising eight athletes, earned their positions through a peer‑voted election, ensuring that the selection reflects the team’s own perception of who can best serve the group.
A Council Chosen by the Team
Tanner Jacobson, the associate head coach and linebackers coach, will supervise the council, providing a bridge between the coaching staff and the student‑athletes who will steer the program’s direction.
Regular meetings will give the council a platform to discuss strategic initiatives, while its members will also take part in service projects that reinforce community engagement and personal development.
Beyond the Game
This structure follows a revote after the previous council completed its term, marking a deliberate transition that aims to sustain momentum and continuity within the squad.
Eric Kjar, a key figure in the program, stresses that the council’s purpose extends far beyond on‑field duties; it is designed to distribute leadership responsibilities more evenly across the roster and to foster holistic program growth.
