Franklin Regional’s Playoff Hopes
The Franklin Regional Panthers enter the new season with a strong foundation, having reached the WPIAL Class 3A championship game five times since 2017. Led by All‑state forward Thomas Bridges, the team returns a healthy roster that includes senior starters Daniel Todd, Rory Bayne, Aiden Alexander, Michael Hillebrand, Colton Walker, and Luca Aguilera. After a 19‑5 record in 2023 and a Section 3 title, the Panthers aim to reclaim a spot in the PIAA postseason.
Injuries sidelined key players Ian Johns and Kai Sheetz last year, but both are now back, adding depth to the midfield. Senior returnees Ryan Schoemer and Caleb Maddock provide additional firepower for the attack. Coach Carter Breen, who took over the program, brings a winning pedigree and expects the team to contend for the title.
Norwin’s Road Back
The Norwin Knights, under new head coach Carter Breen, will practice away from home while a $25 million stadium renovation is completed. The team will host four home games at nearby schools, but the temporary displacement has not dampened expectations. Returning all‑WPIAL forward Ryan Schoemer and leading scorer Caleb Maddock give the Knights a potent offensive core.
Norwin’s depth is further bolstered by the return of Ian Johns and Kai Sheetz, who recovered from season‑ending injuries. The squad finished the previous season with a 65‑19 scoring advantage in their section, and Coach Breen’s history of goal production at Norwin adds confidence to a campaign aimed at playoff contention.
Mount Pleasant and Belle Vernon Strategies
The Mt. Pleasant Vikings, coached by Floyd Snyder, bring playoff experience and a strong defensive record. Key returnees Tyke Snyder and Grant Zahrobsky anchor the midfield, while the team outscored opponents 65‑19 in the previous section. Across town, the Belle Vernon Leopards, led by Tyler Caterino, will adopt a defensive approach after losing four senior starters. Their strategy focuses on disciplined backline play to grind out results.
PIAA Rule Changes and Championships
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) will implement a new officiating system for the upcoming season, assigning a single middle referee to manage fouls and eliminate overlapping calls. Overtime has been removed from regular‑season games, meaning matches may end in ties, potentially affecting playoff seeding. The state finals are scheduled for November 20‑21 at F.N.B. Stadium, marking the first time the championships will be held at that venue.
