Ron Shaffer, the newly appointed head football coach at Plymouth High School, announced his resignation less than five months after taking the position, also stepping down from his role as dean of students.
A Sudden Exit
In a brief statement, Athletic Director Josh Troyer described the move as a personnel matter and emphasized that Shaffer’s departure was not taken lightly, noting it was the right decision for the program and the school.
Shaffer had previously led Rochester for five seasons, compiling a 39‑13 record, and his brief stint at Plymouth was marked by high expectations despite the school’s lack of a sectional championship since 2015.
The school now faces the task of finding a replacement, with district officials indicating that internal candidates such as Brenton Corbett and Kevin Garrity are under consideration as they seek a coach who can restore momentum to the program.
Community members and parents have expressed both surprise and concern, recognizing that this will be the fifth head coach hired this century, a turnover that underscores the challenges the school has faced on the field.
While Shaffer cited personal reasons for his exit, the episode highlights the pressures of modern high school athletics and the delicate balance between administrative duties and coaching responsibilities.
