Horace Greeley’s field hockey team entered the 2025 campaign with a clear objective: protect the Section 1 Class B title that it captured just a year earlier. The victory was achieved despite a grueling schedule and a roster that lost seven seniors, among them three who earned All‑State honors.
A Season of Renewal
The previous season ended in a narrow 2‑1 defeat to Burnt Hills‑Ballston Lake in the state Class B semifinals, a game in which Greeley held a 12‑2 advantage on penalty corners yet could not convert. That loss lingered as both a sting and a catalyst for the current squad.
This year’s slate pits the team against formidable opponents such as White Plains, Brewster and Rye, each known for disciplined play and depth. The early portion of the schedule is designed to test the newcomers and forge cohesion before the league playoffs.
Leadership Emerges
Among the returning letters are several standout performers. Sienna Tavolacci, an All‑State selection as a sophomore, brings speed and creativity, having recorded 30 goals and 22 assists in the prior year. Freshman All‑Section honoree Harriet Moraes will join her in leading the offense, while Izzy Concha and Megan Slomsky add experience to the midfield.
Coach Sukhi Sandhu emphasizes that the team’s youth is not a weakness but a source of resilience. He notes that the players are focused on hard work and mental preparation rather than relying on past prestige, a mindset that has shaped their approach to each practice and match.
Between the lines of the attack, the defense will be anchored by netminder Darby Robertson, who is expected to start for a second consecutive season. His presence provides stability, even as the back line integrates new faces following the departure of key defensive contributors.
Looking Forward
The coaching staff repeatedly reminds the squad that the memory of the 2024 semifinal loss fuels their determination. ‘We will give 110 percent,’ a player said, reflecting a collective resolve to turn near‑misses into future triumphs. As the season unfolds, the blend of seasoned leadership and fresh talent promises to keep Greeley competitive. The team’s blend of defensive solidity, offensive spark, and a culture built on perseverance positions it to contend for another Section 1 crown.
