A New Era for UWF Basketball
On November 29, the University of West Florida’s men’s basketball program will step onto the national stage when it hosts Florida State University at the Pensacola Bay Center. The contest, dubbed the Battle at the Bay, represents the first NCAA Division I game in the school’s history and arrives as part of a challenging non‑conference slate.
The matchup is notable not only for its historic significance but also for the caliber of opponent. Florida State brings an Atlantic Coast Conference pedigree to Pensacola, joining a schedule that also includes games against Florida International University, the University of South Florida and Navy.
UWF Athletic Director Dave Scott emphasized the broader impact of the game, describing it as an exciting opportunity for the program and the surrounding community. “This is a chance to showcase who we are,” Scott said.
Head Coach Tanner Smith echoed the sentiment, highlighting the platform the game provides for the team and its fans. “Competing against a program like Florida State will help us measure our growth and inspire our players,” Smith added.
Tickets for the Battle at the Bay will become available to the general public at 10 a.m. on August 28, with presale information already on offer. The game is part of the Pensacola Hardwood Series, a collaboration between the Pensacola Bay Center and Russ Potts Productions Inc.
Beyond the court, the event underscores the growing partnership between UWF athletics and local stakeholders, aiming to bring increased visibility and economic activity to the region. Fans can expect a lively atmosphere as the university debuts its Division I basketball program.
