Eligibility crackdown hits Texas high school football
A recent ruling by the University Interscholastic League has stripped Texas running back Bo Davis of eligibility for the 2026 football season.
Davis, who starred for Lubbock High as a sophomore, amassed 1,349 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns, earning the 2025 Lubbock Avalanche‑Journal newcomer of the year honor.
The decision follows a series of eligibility disputes that have also sidelined five‑star quarterback Colton Nussmeier and re‑classified cornerback John Meredith III, both of whom have since moved to new schools.
Davis’s transfer from Lubbock High to Memorial High earlier this year violated UIL transfer regulations aimed at preventing athletic‑driven school changes, a rule the league enforces to preserve competitive balance.
Consequently, the Frenship Panthers will be without the standout back when the 2026 fall campaign begins, marking the program’s inaugural varsity season under the new lineup.
The UIL’s 4‑2 vote by the District 2‑5A Executive Committee on August 11 underscores the growing scrutiny of player movement, a trend that has already forced high‑profile athletes to reconsider their paths.
While the league has not disclosed the full list of affected players, the cases of Davis, Nussmeier and Meredith illustrate how transfer rulings can reshape recruiting landscapes across the state.
