Jack Ishmael has been hired as the new head baseball coach of the Chico Dragons, taking over from Stephen Renteria after the latter’s two‑season tenure. The appointment was announced this week, marking a return to Wise County for a coach who grew up just a short drive away.
Ishmael’s high school days at Paradise High School were marked by versatility, earning All‑Wise Defense honors in football and serving as a two‑year letterman on the baseball team, achievements that still resonate among local fans.
After his senior baseball season was cut short by the COVID‑19 pandemic, he joined McMurry University’s War Hawks, where he played for five seasons, amassing 587 all‑purpose yards and six touchdowns, experiences that gave him a deep understanding of collegiate competition.
Coaching Roots and Community Ties
His coaching career began as an assistant at Dublin, where he spent two seasons under head coach Andrew Norwood, building relationships with current Chico staff members Pete Hart, Jason Sanders and Joe Bounds that helped seal his fit for the Dragons’ bench.
Ishmael’s family is deeply embedded in the district; his mother, Andrea, teaches within Chico ISD, while his father, Michael, works in maintenance, giving him a personal stake in the community’s success.
In addition to leading the baseball program, he will also coach junior high boys basketball and lend his expertise to the Dragons’ football team, a dual role that underscores his commitment to a holistic athletic environment.
The Dragons have struggled recently, posting a 1‑18 record in Renteria’s final season and extending their playoff drought to three years, a backdrop that makes Ishmael’s appointment all the more pivotal.
Rebuilding the Program
Ishmael says he wants to rebuild the program by emphasizing fundamentals and structure, aiming to make the team competitive in the demanding 10‑2A league where rivals such as Alvord, Boyd and Paradise have enjoyed recent state titles.
With a blend of local pride, proven playing experience and a clear tactical vision, Ishmael hopes to guide the Dragons back to the postseason and restore the competitive spirit that once defined Wise County baseball.
