At 21, Matthew Mayich is stepping onto a new stage in college hockey. Hailing from Stoney Creek, Ontario, the defenseman spent the last four seasons captaining the Ottawa 67’s in the Ontario Hockey League, where he amassed 99 points and earned a reputation as a reliable two‑way player.
A Fresh Face for the Sun Devils
After being selected 170th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2023 NHL Draft, Mayich earned a spot at the Blues’ training camp and prospect showcase, even lighting the lamp once during the exhibition games. His performance caught the attention of scouts and set the stage for his next move.
The 2025‑26 season saw him join Clarkson University, where he posted 15 points — seven goals and eight assists — while blocking 28 shots in 34 games. He led all freshmen in ice time, averaging 19 minutes and 47 seconds per contest, a testament to the coaching staff’s trust in his abilities.
In the ECAC quarterfinal series, Mayich delivered a shorthanded goal and an assist in Game 2, helping his team rally to a 4‑3 victory. The play highlighted his knack for contributing in high‑pressure moments and underscored his defensive instincts.
Now, he is preparing to transfer to Arizona State for the 2026‑27 campaign. The move brings a blend of NHL draft experience, OHL leadership and NCAA readiness to a program eager to bolster its defensive core.
Coaches at Arizona State see Mayich as a player who can immediately impact both ends of the ice. His ability to eat minutes, protect the net and chip in offensively aligns with the Sun Devils’ strategy of building a balanced, competitive roster.
