A New Leadership Core
The University of Idaho football program revealed its four captains for the 2026 season, a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars who will guide the team through a demanding schedule. Their selection reflects a consensus among coaches and teammates that these players embody the grit and accountability needed to compete in the Big Sky Conference.
Joshua Wood, a second‑year Vandal, returns after a productive sophomore campaign in which he completed 58% of his passes for nearly 1,900 yards and 14 touchdowns. In addition to his passing duties, Wood rushed 86 times for 589 yards and seven touchdowns, including a three‑score effort against Montana, underscoring his dual‑threat versatility.
Layton Vining anchors the offensive line, having started 29 career games and earning praise from head coach Loren Endsley for his high football IQ and leadership. The line returns four of its five starters from 2024, collectively boasting 83 starts, which should provide continuity and stability for the offense.
Defensive Transformation
Cruz Hepburn, once a baseball standout, switched to linebacker and exploded in 2025 with 71 tackles, six for loss, and a fumble return touchdown. As the team’s leading returning tackler in his fifth year, he is expected to be a cornerstone of the defense under coordinator Lee Stalker.
Zach Wusstig, a senior safety, contributed 49 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss across 11 games last season, anchoring a secondary that will benefit from his experience and playmaking ability.
Thomas Ford Jr., a veteran analyst of the program, highlighted the captains’ blend of toughness, teamwork, and dedication, noting that their work ethic will shape the Vandals’ culture as they aim to improve on recent performances.
The captains each earned more than 65 votes from teammates, a testament to the respect they command within the locker room. Their leadership will be tested early, but the coaching staff believes the group’s diverse skill set positions Idaho for a competitive season.
