The Professional Footballers’ Association has announced its player of the year awards for the 2023‑24 season, honouring Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United as the men’s winner and Khadija Shaw of Manchester City as the women’s champion.
Fernandes dazzled the Premier League with 21 assists, shattering the previous record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, while also contributing nine goals that helped United climb to third place after a sluggish start.
Manchester United’s resurgence under new manager Ruben Amorim was overseen by interim boss Michael Carrick, whose tactical tweaks turned a disappointing opening into a credible finish to the campaign.
Shaw, meanwhile, spearheaded Manchester City’s first Women’s Super League title in a decade, netting 19 goals in 21 appearances and securing the league’s top‑scorer award for the third straight year.
A Decade‑Long Wait Ends
The City women’s side had waited ten years for a championship, and Shaw’s leadership proved decisive as the club lifted the trophy in front of a jubilant crowd.
The PFA’s young player awards went to Nico O’Reilly of Manchester City and Olivia Smith of Arsenal, with Smith adding another accolade after a world‑record move from Liverpool to Arsenal.
Both award ceremonies highlighted the growing influence of player votes, with former United stalwart Michael Carrick and the Football Writers’ Association playing key roles in the selection process.
The recognition also brought attention to the clubs’ official partners, including the Premier League’s broadcasting partners and the Football Writers’ Association, whose website can be found at fwa.co.uk.
