CeCe Schlegel, a standout soccer player from Freeport, Pennsylvania, has verbally committed to join the University of Iowa’s women’s soccer program, bringing her versatile skill set to the Big Ten conference.
During her high school career, Schlegel helped the Freeport girls soccer team capture their first Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) championship last season, a triumph that highlighted her adaptability across forward, midfielder and defender positions.
Coaches recognized her versatility by naming her to the all‑section team, and she attracted attention from several Division I programs, including Miami (Ohio), Pittsburgh and the University of Virginia, before deciding on Iowa.
Schlegel cited Iowa’s strong academic reputation and its competitive soccer culture as decisive factors, noting that the Hawkeyes’ recent 12‑5‑4 record and at‑large NCAA Tournament berth demonstrated a program on the rise.
A Program Rebuilding with Purpose
Freeport’s squad is undergoing a transition after star forward Cam Woods suffered an ACL tear that will sideline him for the entire senior season, while junior forward Elena Jenkins is recovering from a broken collarbone that could keep her out until the WPIAL playoffs.
Coach Steve Kukic emphasized that Schlegel’s leadership and positional flexibility will be vital as the team integrates returning players and freshmen, aiming to remain competitive despite the setbacks.
Beyond the pitch, Schlegel expressed excitement about contributing to Iowa’s community, balancing athletic ambitions with academic growth, and helping the Hawkeyes sustain their upward trajectory in the Big Ten.
