A New Chapter for the Salukis
The Southern Illinois University Salukis will kick off the 2026 football season on Thursday night in Pensacola, Florida, where they meet West Florida for the first time in program history. The matchup, set for 6 p.m. at PenAir Field, will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Preseason expectations have the Salukis ranked 16th in the nation according to both Stats Perform and the American Football Coaches Association, a testament to the momentum built after a 7‑5 record in 2025.
That 2025 campaign featured a three‑game non‑conference winning streak over Thomas More, UT Martin and Southeast Missouri State, punctuated by a 37‑7 triumph over Illinois State in which quarterback D.J. Williams and running back Edward Robinson each eclipsed the 100‑yard mark.
Williams capped the season with a historic performance, rushing for 847 yards and 18 touchdowns while also ranking 11th nationally in passing yards and 18th in passing scores. His dual‑threat ability helped the Salukis’ rushing attack average 36.4 points per game, the highest since 2007.
The offense will retain its core, with Robinson and Chandler Chapman among the five running backs who found the end zone last year, while the line benefits from the return of offensive guard Blaine Halley, who earned a preseason watch‑list nod.
Defensively, the Salukis bring back five starters, including linebacker Andrew Behm and defensive end Jake Parrella, who helped anchor a unit that contributed to the team’s overall success.
Road Challenges and Opportunities
SIU is slated to play seven away games, including a trip to Alabama to face Samford and a showdown at Murray State in Kentucky. The schedule also features a visit to Champaign, Illinois, where the team will test itself against a different style of play.
Across the border, West Florida (UWF) arrives as a Division II powerhouse transitioning to the FCS level. In their inaugural NCAA reclassification year, the Argonauts are guided by quarterback‑turned‑coach Kaleb Nobles, who previously starred at Valdosta State. UWF entered the United Athletic Conference preseason poll at eighth place.
The broader context adds intrigue: the Salukis have logged 11 playoff appearances in school history, and head coach Hill has steered multiple teams to postseason victories since 2019. As the new season unfolds, the blend of experienced talent and fresh competition promises a compelling narrative for fans and analysts alike.
