Reclassification has reshaped the landscape, most notably with Ambridge stepping up to Class 3A. Meanwhile, teams such as Beaver Area and Central Valley remain in Class 2A, where they hope to build on recent postseason breakthroughs.
Playoff Aspirations and Rebuilding Efforts
Several programs enter the season with clear playoff targets. Moon Area, which finished the previous year with a 19‑3 record, looks to reload after losing several senior standouts, while Quaker Valley aims to continue its tradition of deep playoff runs. Sewickley Academy, the only Beaver Valley team to reach the WPIAL championship last year, returns a core group that helped it advance to the quarterfinals.
Blackhawk hopes to improve on a season that saw it finish behind Chartiers Valley in section play, and West Allegheny, after a third‑place finish, is eyeing another berth. Beaver Area, posting a 9‑8‑1 record a year ago, brings back Mia Furda and Alaina Mollura to fuel another push.
Key Returners and New Faces
Among the returning stars are Emily Wissner, Mallory Smith and Kat Benkowski of Ambridge, who will anchor the attack for the newly classified 3A squad. Central Valley will rely on Mylee Snyder and Gia Guandolo, while Quaker Valley’s leading scorer Annabel Miko returns to lead the offense. Riverside, moving up to Class 2A, hopes to capitalize on past playoff appearances, and Freedom Area will count on breakout freshmen Katelyn VanDeCar and Sophia Bruce.
New coaching directions add another layer of intrigue. Martin Byrnes takes the helm at Hopewell, a team that went winless a season ago, and will look to Isabella Torres and Sadie Lubert to spark improvement. OLSH welcomes Harry Hynkoop, who inherits a deep roster featuring Maribel Medwig and Hannah Hayes.
Sewickley Academy, posting a 19‑3 record last year, will again count on Emma Eannarino and Gabby Edmunds as they chase another deep playoff run. In contrast, South Side, which finished 0‑12 in Class 1A, begins a rebuilding phase under a young coaching staff.
