A season in jeopardy
South Eugene High School announced that it will not field a varsity football team for the 2026 season, a decision driven by a combination of dwindling participation and safety considerations.
Only 13 of the 19 athletes who had signed up for the upcoming campaign possessed prior varsity experience, leaving the roster too thin to compete safely against traditional Class 5A Midwestern League opponents.
The school noted that the program has struggled for years, having finished the 2025 season winless at 0‑9 and not recorded a victory since 2019, while also missing the 2020 and 2021 varsity seasons altogether.
Because of the limited experience and the desire to protect younger players from potentially dangerous matchups, administrators opted to move the remaining athletes to junior varsity competition and explore lower‑classification matchups for those who wish to continue.
Looking ahead
School officials said they are working with local youth leagues to expand tackle football opportunities for middle‑school students, hoping to build a more sustainable pipeline that can support a competitive varsity program in future years.
The decision has sparked discussion among parents, rival schools and community leaders about the future of high school football in the region, with some praising the safety‑first approach and others expressing concern over the loss of tradition.
Rival teams such as North Eugene have already felt the impact, having forfeited a scheduled game earlier this year when South Eugene’s roster was depleted by injuries, underscoring the ripple effects of the cancellation.
While the school’s enrollment typically places it in the Class 6A bracket for most sports, football competes in Class 5A due to a state‑wide classification adjustment, a nuance that adds another layer to the competitive landscape.
Looking ahead, the administration plans to publish a detailed roadmap for revitalizing the football pipeline, including potential partnerships with regional clubs and increased funding for equipment and coaching resources.
