Andy Englert, who has steered the Avon Riverhawks football program for 28 seasons, announced this week that he will step away from the sideline for a year to focus on his son Trent’s senior campaign at York/Pavilion.
A Temporary Leadership Shift
Justin Dueppengiesser, a longtime assistant who first crossed paths with Englert as a ball boy in 1997, will serve as interim head coach during Englert’s absence. The Riverhawks’ board approved Dueppengiesser’s appointment in August 2026, giving the veteran assistant the chance to lead the team he has helped build for decades.
Dueppengiesser’s deep roots in the program extend beyond the locker room. He recalls his early days as a sideline helper for Englert, a relationship that has evolved into a partnership built on trust and shared football philosophy.
The Riverhawks enter the 2026 season with a clear championship ambition: a Class D three‑peat that would cement their place among the state’s elite. Returning standout James Chase, who amassed 916 rushing yards in the 2025 title game, headlines a roster that blends experience with youthful hunger.
Avon’s schedule presents a gauntlet of tough matchups, including rematches against Geneseo/Mt. Morris and a showdown with York/Pavilain that will test the team’s resolve. Dueppengiesser emphasizes the squad’s depth at the line of scrimmage, noting that few Class D programs can boast such seasoned position groups.
