Preseason Outlook for TCNJ Men's Soccer
The TCNJ men's soccer squad entered the NJAC Preseason Coaches' Poll with a third‑place finish, trailing only Rowan University and Montclair State University. The poll, which gathered first‑place votes from a dozen conference programs, highlighted the Lions' potential to contend for the top spot.
Returning standouts anchor the offense. Chris Meder, the previous season's top playmaker, tallied 11 assists and 37 points, earning First Team All‑Conference and All‑Region honors. Joining him are Matt Will, a Second Team All‑Conference forward who contributed nine goals and three assists, and Matias Hornos, a 2024 All‑NJAC Second Teamer who added three goals and four assists.
Defensively, the Lions boast a conference‑best 0.81 goals‑against average, thanks to the steady presence of Lawrence Mancino and Matt Maceri, as well as goalkeeper Sean Najdzinowicz, all of whom received All‑Conference recognition last year.
Head coach DeMatteo emphasized continuity, noting that the team will build on last season’s progress while integrating fresh talent. Newcomers such as midfielders Tye Maser, Rory Grace and Ashton Ritter are expected to make immediate impacts.
The non‑conference slate opens with a home match against Manhattanville on September 1, followed by road trips to Elmira and Ithaca. NJAC competition begins on September 30 with a high‑profile encounter against 12th‑ranked Rowan.
With a blend of proven leaders and promising newcomers, the Lions aim to translate their preseason third‑place ranking into a championship run. The upcoming schedule offers ample opportunity to test their mettle against strong opponents and climb the conference standings.
