Injury Shadows Season Opener
Tyler Brown, Iowa’s projected starter for the 2026 season opener against Northern Illinois, is listed as questionable after a soft‑tissue injury sidelined him throughout fall camp.
The injury forced the coaching staff to turn to Anthony Hawkins, who has emerged as the team’s strong safety in Brown’s absence. Hawkins, a transfer from Villanova, logged 59 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble during the 2025 season.
Brown’s potential return would add depth to Iowa’s nickel and dime packages, giving the defense more flexibility in sub‑package situations.
Defensive coordinator Phil Parker praised Hawkins’s performance, noting that the young safety has “shown poise and playmaking ability” while filling the void left by Brown.
Originally a standout at James Madison, Brown arrived in Iowa as a high‑profile transfer. In his lone season with the Dukes he recorded 80 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack and an interception, numbers that made him a key piece of the Hawkeyes’ secondary.
If Brown is fully healthy, he could resume his role in the secondary, but the coaching staff remains cautious, emphasizing a gradual reintegration into practice before the opener.
