Regional consolidation aims to boost community engagement
The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has unveiled a sweeping redesign of the 2028 state basketball tournament, moving the semifinal and championship rounds to venues in Wichita and Hutchinson. This marks the first occasion since 1945 that all final‑round games will be confined to a 60‑mile radius, a change driven by extensive feedback from member schools and fans.
Wichita State’s Koch Arena, Friends University’s Garvey Center and the newly built Heartland Federal Credit Union Arena in Park City will serve as the primary host sites. In Hutchinson, the semifinals and finals for Class 2A will take center stage, while the remainder of the state’s teams will compete in the broader Wichita area.
Assistant Executive Director Kyle Doperalski explained that the realignment reflects a desire to streamline logistics and create a more intimate tournament atmosphere. "Our membership told us they want a tighter, more accessible experience," he said, noting that the neutral‑site quarterfinals will continue to be played in the same venues as this year’s event.
Executive Director Bill Faflick added that clustering the games in the greater Wichita region will amplify fan support, increase attendance and provide a stronger sense of community for student‑athletes. He emphasized that the model could serve as a template for future editions of the tournament.
Beyond the logistical benefits, the KSHSAA hopes the new structure will enhance the overall experience for players, coaches and spectators alike, fostering greater excitement and participation across Kansas high school basketball.
