ESPN reshuffles College GameDay production staff after a decade

Veteran producer Jim Gaiero exits lead role as Matthew Garrett steps in, while the show’s analyst roster remains intact for its September debut

A New Chapter for College GameDay

After a decade at the helm of ESPN’s flagship College GameDay, veteran producer Jim Gaiero has been removed from his lead role, marking the end of a ten‑year tenure that helped shape the program’s modern identity.

Matthew Garrett, the network’s vice president of production, will assume the role of executive producer, taking over the day‑to‑day oversight of the Saturday morning broadcast that draws millions of college‑football fans each week.

Gaiero’s departure does not signal a complete exit from ESPN’s football coverage; instead, he will transition to a support capacity, lending his expertise to a broader bench of college‑football event producers and contributing to the network’s Super Bowl pregame studio shows in February.

In addition, Gaiero will help steer ESPN’s golf strategy, collaborating with Mike McQuade on the Masters and the PGA Championship from 2027, with full production responsibilities slated for 2028.

The shake‑up follows a series of production changes at the network, including the exit of Lee Fitting and the appointment of Amanda Gifford to oversee college‑football production, as ESPN seeks to refresh its approach while retaining a strong analytical lineup.

The current roster of analysts — Pat McAfee, Nick Saban, Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit — will continue to appear alongside host Rece Davis, who remains the face of the program as it prepares for its first broadcast on September 5 from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the Clemson‑LSU season opener.
