A Season Cut Short
Sherrard High School announced that it will discontinue its varsity football schedule for the current season, citing an inability to field a competitive lineup without endangering the few remaining players.
The school’s roster has been whittled down to a handful of athletes who are forced to play both sides of the ball on every snap, a situation that raises the likelihood of injuries and burnout.
Principal Alex Johnson and head coach Zach Weigel emphasized that the decision was not made lightly, but that safeguarding the students’ physical well‑being and preserving the program for future years left no viable alternative.
Despite the disappointment, the administration plans to recognize the five senior players and their families during the final matchup against Orion this Friday, embedding special traditions into the ceremony.
Moving forward, Sherrard will concentrate on junior varsity competition and intends to rebuild a full varsity roster for the following season, hoping to return to a more sustainable schedule.
