A Strategic Shift for Stock Car Racing
NASCAR is charting a bold expansion that would see stock‑car events staged on U.S. military installations, with the first confirmed race scheduled for 2027 at Naval Base Coronado.
The initiative stems from a partnership between the racing series and the Department of Defense, designed to tap into new geographic markets such as the Pacific Northwest, the heartland and the northeast by leveraging the vast acreage and infrastructure of large bases.
Among the sites under consideration are Joint Base Lewis‑McChord in Washington, Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Benning in Georgia, each selected for its size, accessibility and proximity to major population centers.
Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s chief operating officer, has been actively involved in discussions with the DoD, emphasizing the logistical feasibility of constructing temporary circuits and the potential boost to fan engagement in regions that have historically received limited racing dates.
A recent June event at Naval Base Coronado demonstrated the spectacle of racing against a military backdrop, highlighting how the collaboration can elevate the sport’s visibility while honoring the host installations.
If realized, the schedule could reshape the traditional calendar, offering fans new opportunities to experience races close to home and introducing the sport to service members and their families.
