Maggie Malecha, a former University of St. Thomas women’s hockey standout, has been named the 2026 recipient of the College Hockey Inc. Scholarship, a distinction that celebrates student‑athletes who extend their impact beyond the rink.
The award, presented by JLG Architects in memory of founder Lonnie Laffen, recognizes her two‑year effort to build a summer hockey camp in Northfield, Minnesota, where participation has swelled from 120 to 175 youngsters.
Malecha’s collegiate career spanned 21 games between 2022 and 2026, during which she earned three selections to the WCHA All‑Academic Team and captured a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2026.
Beyond the ice, she now serves as a goalie coach for both the girls’ and boys’ teams at Northfield High School, while pursuing a master’s in education at her alma mater.
A model of volunteerism
College Hockey Inc. and JLG Architects highlighted her commitment to community service, noting that the scholarship not only supports her graduate studies but also reinforces the broader mission of growing the sport at the grassroots level.
The $2,500 scholarship will be applied toward her master’s program, allowing Malecha to continue her dual role as educator and hockey mentor.
