The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer program is gearing up for the 2026 campaign, and the excitement is palpable as the Chargers prepare to host two early‑season home fixtures at the familiar confines of Charger Park.
Home Opener at Charger Park
The first match pits the Chargers against Illinois Springfield on Friday, August 28, at 4 p.m., followed by a Sunday showdown with Kentucky Wesleyan on August 30 at noon. Both games promise competitive soccer and an opportunity for the team to fine‑tune its rhythm before conference play.
Head coach James Ballamy, now in his eighth season at the helm, brings continuity and a clear tactical identity to the squad. Under his guidance, the team aims to build on last year’s 6‑9‑2 record and push for a stronger finish in the Gulf South Conference.
Returning Talent and New Faces
Senior forward Carley White returns as a cornerstone of the attack. She earned preseason All‑Conference honors and led the team with four goals in 2025, including three game‑winning strikes. Joining her are Adriana Rojas and Michella Tortelli, each of whom contributed three goals last season, and Ashley Wells, who added a goal and solid depth up front.
Freshmen AC Blackaby and Tuva Lundström arrive as highly anticipated newcomers. Both have been named to the GSC Newcomers to Watch list, bringing fresh energy and versatility to the roster.
Between the posts, CeCe Szopa returns as the starting goalkeeper. She has started 44 matches in her career, posting nine clean sheets and maintaining a 1.11 career goals‑against average, providing stability and confidence to the defensive line.
The Chargers enter the new season with a renewed sense of purpose after a modest 6‑9‑2 record in 2025. Fans can enjoy all regular‑season home games at Charger Park free of charge, a benefit made possible through the support of Alabama Credit Union.
