FAU Owls Gear Up for a Make-or-Break 2026 Season

Rebuilding under Zach Kittley, key returnees and a demanding schedule aim to shift the program’s trajectory

A Season of Rebuilding

The Florida Atlantic University Owls are preparing for what many analysts see as a pivotal 2026 campaign. After a 4-8 finish in Zach Kittley’s inaugural season, the program is looking to turn a modest record into a foundation for sustained success.

Central to that hope are the players who decided to stay. Quarterback Caden Veltkamp and wide receiver Easton Messer both opted to remain with the Owls rather than seek transfers, giving the team continuity at key skill positions. Their presence has helped FAU achieve the 16th-best returning player production in the nation according to ESPN.

The schedule, however, does not offer many easy wins. The season opens with a much-anticipated matchup against the University of Florida Gators, marking the first meeting in five years. Florida, which has never lost to FAU, will field sophomore transfer Aaron Philio at quarterback, while the Owls will be looking to exploit a historically dominant opponent.

Beyond the Gators, the Owls will test themselves against a diverse slate that includes a home opener against Navy, a Shula Bowl rivalry game with Florida International University, and contests with ULM, Texas Southern, Army, Rice, North Texas, Tulsa, South Florida and East Carolina. Each opponent brings a different challenge, from the service academy’s disciplined attack to the Tigers’ recent resurgence under a program that saw its first winning season in 25 years.

The Owls also face familiar foes such as North Texas, against whom they hold an 8-7 all-time edge but have not beaten since the 2017 Conference USA championship, and Rice, a 3-3 tie that will be broken in this year’s homecoming clash. Meanwhile, a new chapter unfolds at USF, where former Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline takes the helm, adding another layer of intrigue to the late-season showdown.

Betting markets reflect the uncertainty, with BETMGM projecting a win total near 4.5 games for the Owls. That figure sits just above the threshold the team has historically needed to claim a successful season, especially given that they have won at least four games in back-to-back years in the past.
