The University of Michigan men’s basketball program is once again heading to Las Vegas for the Players Era Championships, marking its return to the event for the 2026‑27 season.
A New Tournament Landscape
Their first test will come against Creighton, a team that earned the right to face the Wolverines in the opening round. Should Michigan advance, they could meet the winner of a clash between Miami and TCU later in the competition.
The tournament structure has been reshaped for 2026. An eight‑team bracket will be played the week of Thanksgiving, followed by a 16‑team bracket that begins on November 26. That second stage will feature traditional powerhouses such as Tennessee, Gonzaga, Louisville, Alabama, Baylor, St. John’s and others.
Last season the Wolverines captured the championship with dominant wins over San Diego State, Auburn and Gonzaga, a run that propelled them into a successful year and a national championship berth. Their experience and depth give them a clear target: to repeat as champions.
Head coach Dusty May, now in his third year at the helm, emphasized the team’s preparation and the importance of staying focused through the early rounds. ‘We know what it takes to win,’ May said, ‘and we’re eager to show that we can do it again.’
