A Dual Induction Celebrates Two Eras
The Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame will welcome two Columbus natives into its ranks on October 24, when the Class of 2026 is formally enshrined at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
Jasper Sanks, who starred as a running back for Carver High School during the 1990s, compiled a career total of 5,043 rushing yards that still ranks among the most prolific in state history. His relentless style and durability helped shape a generation of local talent and cemented his place as a cornerstone of Columbus football lore.
John Henry Jackson, a quarterback at Spencer High School in the 1950s, led his team to an undefeated season and a state championship in 1956. He later became the first known Black player from Georgia to compete in a major historically white football conference, pursued a professional career in the Canadian Football League and the Continental Football League, and went on to open the iconic soul‑food restaurant Underground Railroad in Toronto, a venue that remains a cultural touchstone for the community.
Historic Milestones and Community Roots
The induction ceremony is organized by the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame, a body that draws on former coaches, players, administrators and reporters to evaluate roughly one‑third of the 100 annual nominees. The selection committee’s decisions are reflected in the Hall’s partnership with institutions such as the College Football Hall of Fame and the Atlanta Journal‑Constitution, which together preserve the sport’s rich narrative.
Sanks and Jackson join a distinguished lineage of Columbus and Muscogee County inductees, including former stars Isaiah Crowell, Ernie Green, Jarvis Jones and Otis Sistrunk, whose own enshrinements continue to inspire new generations of athletes across the region.
