The Marquette Senior High School boys soccer team entered the new season with a modest but encouraging start, dropping six matches in the opening week and carving out a 2‑3‑1 record that reflects both promise and growing pains.
Early Tournament Experience
Two of those contests unfolded at the Boyne Mountain Invitational, where the Sentinels squared off against traditional powerhouses such as Flint Powers Catholic and Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central. Though victories eluded them, the tournament served as a crucible for testing the squad against elite competition.
Offensive Spark
The team’s attack found its rhythm in a decisive win over Kingsford, highlighted by Ty Sadler’s hat‑trick that included a converted penalty kick, while Seth Sandstrom contributed a pivotal assist that underscored his playmaking role. Senior captain Charlie Hrodey, who missed the first game due to injury, remains a focal point of the offense and is expected to return later in the season.
Coach Charlie Hill praised the squad’s growing self‑assurance, noting that the tough tournament schedule acted as a confidence‑building exercise despite the losses. He highlighted the defensive unit’s improvement and the goalkeepers’ reliability as cornerstones of the team’s emerging identity.
Looking ahead, the Sentinels are set to host the Flivvers and Ortonville Brandon this Saturday, matches that could further test their progress as the season unfolds and provide additional opportunities for key players to shine.
