After an 18‑month planning process, the Abilene Christian University women's basketball squad embarked on a two‑week expedition that took them from the historic streets of Athens to the vibrant communities of Rwanda. The itinerary was designed not only to showcase the team against semi‑professional opponents but also to foster deep camaraderie among players and to immerse them in new cultural settings.
The trip began with training sessions and sightseeing in Greece, where the Wildcats faced local clubs and celebrated a milestone birthday for guard Erin Woodson, who had long dreamed of visiting the country. From there, the team flew to Rwanda, a nation that quickly became the emotional centerpiece of the journey.
Service That Resonated
In Rwanda, the Wildcats shifted focus from competition to contribution, spending several days running a basketball clinic for local children. The youngsters arrived eager to play, a stark contrast to many camps where participation is optional, and their enthusiasm underscored the team's belief in the power of sport to bridge gaps.
Molly Daugherty and the rest of the roster spent time interacting with families, listening to stories, and sharing meals. Their presence sparked gratitude from community members who saw in the visitors a reflection of their own aspirations and resilience.
