Boston University’s field hockey program kicks off its 49th varsity season on August 28, hosting Merrimack at New Balance Field in a highly anticipated opening match.
The arrival of Sarah Shute, a 2008 alumna, as the new head coach marks a transition from Sally Starr, whose 45‑year tenure helped shape the program’s modern era.
Returning Talent and Leadership
The Terriers bring back 16 players, eight of whom started in the 2025 Patriot League championship, including graduate student Caroline O’Brien, who led the team in points, goals and assists and earned MVP honors.
Sophie Ortyl, who started 17 games in goal last season, posted a 2.53 goals‑against average and a .641 save percentage, while co‑captains Maddie Hudson and Maggie Driscoll will lead the squad on the field.
Merrimack, under first‑year head coach Christina Hathaway, enters the contest after a 3‑14 record in 2025 and a seventh‑place preseason poll in the NEC, aiming to challenge the defending champions.
The Terriers will also face Providence on August 30, adding another non‑conference test as they look to build momentum early in the schedule.
