Turning Point for the Panthers
FIU's men's soccer squad broke a winless stretch with a 2-1 victory over No. 20 NC State on Saturday, a result that resonated far beyond the scoreboard.
The Panthers drew first blood in the 22nd minute when Owen Barnett curled a free-kick over the wall and into the net, giving the home side an early cushion.
NC State answered quickly, earning a penalty in the 26th minute that they converted to tie the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The deadlock was broken in the 75th minute when Santi Possu, fed by Martin Piedeleu, slipped a precise strike past the Wolfpack keeper to restore the lead.
Four Panthers — Michele Ballanti, Finn Bauens, Jad Benjelloun and Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano — remained on the pitch for the full 90 minutes, while goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren made two crucial saves to preserve the win.
The triumph marks FIU's first victory over a ranked opponent since October 2025 and ends a 15-month drought against ACC competition, a milestone that could spark momentum for the remainder of the season.
