A Late Surge Ends Syracuse’s Perfect Run
Syracuse University’s women’s soccer team entered the night looking to extend an unbeaten streak, but a late strike from Niagara University turned the tide.
Just 90 seconds into the contest, Caitlyn Gratton opened the scoring, capitalising on a quick move to put the Orange ahead and earn Metro Conference Player of the Week recognition.
Niagara answered with a goal from Lucy Trinder, her first of the season, before the Orange’s attack began to stall. Despite outshot Niagara 12‑7 and holding a 4‑1 corner‑kick advantage, Syracuse could not find the net again until the final minutes, when sophomore Ali Howard’s cross found Moo Galbus, whose effort fell just short.
The decisive moment arrived at 9:52 remaining, when Niagara’s attacker slipped a ball past Junior goalkeeper Maggie Manning, who was making her first regular‑season appearance, and the visitors celebrated the winner.
Syracuse will now host Harvard on Sunday, August 30, at 1:00 p.m. for Senior Day, a ceremony that will honor seven senior players and two managers as the team looks to rebound.
