Western Michigan University’s men’s soccer squad fell 1-0 to the 23rd‑ranked Wisconsin Badgers in their first home match of the season, a result that left the Broncos searching for answers early in the campaign.
Wisconsin opened the scoring in the first half from a set piece, a moment that forced the Broncos to regroup after a period in which they held the ball for over 25 minutes but could not penetrate a disciplined Badgers defense.
A Test of Resilience
The second half saw junior forward Vitor Geromel and sophomore defender Dan McHale each carve out clear opportunities, only to be denied by a series of saves from Wisconsin goalkeeper Michel Judewellin, including a diving stop on Geromel’s free‑kick and a fingertip save on McHale’s 77th‑minute strike.
In goal, Alex Lindewirth turned in two consecutive stops to keep the deficit within reach, while senior forward Joseph Min tested the visitors with two shots on target that narrowly missed the frame.
Coach Chad Wiseman highlighted the team’s defensive strength and the crowd’s enthusiasm, but admitted that the lack of goals was a concern, noting that the side must sharpen its attacking movement before the next road trip.
The Broncos are scheduled to travel to UConn and RV Bryant in September, where they hope to translate their possession‑based approach into a more decisive finish.
