On August 26, the Marquette University men’s soccer team traveled to the NIU Soccer Complex in DeKalb, Illinois, where they faced Northern Illinois University in a tightly contested match that ended 4-2 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
The game began with a blistering start from Marquette, as they struck twice within the first six minutes, putting early pressure on the Huskies’ defense.
Northern Illinois answered back in the second half, with Luka Vasic delivering a pair of goals, including a header from a corner that swung momentum, while teammate Tomiwa Adewumi added his own finish from a low cross and a long ball.
What’s Next for the Huskies?
Midway through the contest, Roman Khela and Vasic combined to level the score at 25 minutes with a corner goal, and later Mads Konrad Horgoien capitalized on a one‑on‑one situation to put Marquette ahead again.
Goalkeeper Cameron Simpson made two crucial saves in the 80th minute to preserve the lead, and Joey Buchanan sealed the result with a fourth goal in the 84th minute, finishing off a swift counterattack.
Coach Ryan Swan later criticized the team’s defensive lapses, noting that the Huskies’ back line struggled to clear danger, but he praised the squad’s resilience and attacking intent.
Looking ahead, the Huskies will host UIC on August 30 with a 7 p.m. kickoff and free admission, aiming to rebound from the loss and fine‑tune their tactics before the next challenge.
