Sandy football has left the 6A Mt. Hood Conference and joined the 5A Special District 1, where it will face new rivals such as Centennial, Gresham and David Douglas. The move comes after a breakthrough season in which the Pioneers doubled their playoff win total and finished as Columbia Cup runners‑up, leaving a lingering sense of unfinished business.
Coach Josh Dill, who has steered the program through the transition, says the team remains laser‑focused on capturing a 5A State Championship. He emphasizes that the aggressive training regimen that produced back‑to‑back playoff victories will continue to drive the squad’s ambition.
Championship Ambition
The offense centers on quarterback Micaiah Turin, a three‑year starter celebrated for his mobility and arm strength. He will rely on senior athlete James Richards, who can line up at running back and other positions, as well as supporting players Hudson Pearson and Gracyn Fitch, to keep defenses guessing.
Defensively, the Pioneers boast an elite unit led by seniors Colton Lucas and Aidan Charbonneau. Described as fast, physical and highly agile, the defense aims to complement the high‑powered offense and create turnovers that can swing momentum.
Off‑season work began in January, with players dedicating significant time to conditioning, skill development and film study. The first test will be a non‑conference clash against Barlow in Hood River, a matchup that will gauge the team’s readiness for the new district schedule.
With the new classification comes fresh challenges, but also a clear pathway to the state title. The Pioneers are poised to translate their recent successes into a championship narrative that could redefine Sandy football for years to come.
