Washington State University is set to honor legendary baseball alumnus John Olerud with a statue and ceremony at Bailey‑Brayton Field on October 23, 2024.
Olerud, a Seattle native who played for the Cougars from 1987 to 1989, remains the only player in NCAA history to post a .434 career batting average while also delivering a 26‑4 record and a 3.17 ERA on the mound.
His dual‑threat ability attracted attention from across the sport, culminating in his recognition as College Athlete of the Year by Baseball America — the sole Coug to earn the honor.
After college, Olerud signed with the Toronto Blue Jays and spent 17 seasons in Major League Baseball, collecting two World Series championships, multiple All‑Star appearances, two Gold Glove Awards and a spot on the record‑setting 2001 Mariners squad.
The ceremony will unveil a bronze statue that captures Olerud’s iconic swing and pitching pose, while also celebrating his later contributions to the game and his lasting impact on collegiate baseball, highlighted by the NCAA’s John Olerud Two‑Way Player of the Year Award.
